Weekend feeding for kids began in 2010 when Port Ludlow residents Karen Jensen & Pam Kelly saw a need to provide nutrition for Chimacum school- children who weren't getting adequately fed over weekends. The two women decided to donate food & began packing bags
in Kelly's living room.
Increased requests from teachers and counselors for a"few more bags" made it clear that there was a larger need. Peace Lutheran Fellowship then stepped in to provide more support through their congregation. The program expanded beyond the church's capabilities and, in early 2018, a separate independent 501(c)(3) charitable corporation was formed under the name it had been known by during the previous several years: Chimacum Backpacks for Kids (CBFK).
Karen, a 1970 Chimacum High School graduate, possessed the ability to create change for better. She began writing grants to fund the program. Because of her energetic, selfless and passionate efforts, Chimacum Backpack for Kids has become a sustained, robust food for kids program.
The legacy of the founders has endured.
